More than a third (38%) of winter sports holidaymakers admitted that they don’t always take out travel insurance, and 31% don’t always check their policy to ensure they are covered for winter sports activities.
The ABI advises anyone travelling abroad this winter to:
- Ensure you have travel insurance to cover the costs of any emergency medical treatment.
- Make sure that the policy includes all of the activities you may participate in on holiday. If you have an annual travel insurance policy, or travel insurance is provided alongside your bank account or credit card, you may need to add winter sports cover before your trip.
- If travelling in Europe, have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). While this is not a substitute for having travel insurance, it is free and allows you to receive treatment from public hospitals in all European Economic Area countries and Switzerland on the same basis as a resident of that country.
- Remember that some actions may invalidate your insurance. Skiing off-piste without a qualified guide, not wearing a helmet or drinking alcohol could leave you facing expensive medical bills.
